Container makers awarded for new coatings

The Assn of Postconsumer Plastic Recyclers, an organization based in Arlington, VA, has awarded its Partners for Change Award to four packaging container producers for their participation in a program aimed at testing new bottle compositions in cooperation with plastic recyclers. The companies, which tested polyethylene terephthalate bottles treated with Bairocade coatings, include Graham Packaging, Constar, Amcor PET Packaging and PPG Industries.

Challenges await single serve container recycling
Article Abstract:
The National Assn for PET Container Resources and the National Soft Drink Assn have launched two pilot programs designed to educate consumers on the recycling of "convenience' containers. Although the volume of PET packaging has continued to increase, its recycling rate fell to 23.7% in 1999 from 24.8% in 1998. Under the program, 100% recycled PET bins have been placed in convenience stores and places where single serve containers are often used.

The Internet moves into the paper recycling industry

Several Internet-based companies have launched websites to facilitate paper recycling industry's business-to-business transactions. These include Recycling Today Media Group's www.FiberMarketNews.com, www.PaperExchange.com and www.FiberMarket.com. The website, www.forestweb.com, which claims to be the Yahoo! of the paper industry, has also been launched.
