Food residuals recovery in California

Article Abstract:

California is starting to carry out food waste recovery as part of a wider recycling program. San Francisco and Berkeley have set up recycling programs that are commercial and municipally sponsored. Pilot programs allow the municipalities to develop programs that are viable. Private sector initiatives have also been set up. but cannot be relied on, and some localities in California have no program. Franchise agreements, education, and regulations are all important in this initiative.

The CaliforniaEs and San Francisco project on converting waste into soil amendments for use by farmers, private landscapers, and community beautification relies on biodegradable bin liners to broaden participation and reduce contamination of organics by nonbiodegradable plastic bags. For the purpose of this project San Francisco made compulsory to use only compostable bags certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI).
