Managing woody residuals in static piles

Article Abstract:

The Florence Provincial Plan for waste management in Campi Bisenzio, Italy, uses outdoor static piles for composting and aims at a 20% residential diversion rate. Expansion plans will increase the site capacity to 20,000 tons/yr. Static piles have a pile irrigation system and temperature monitors. The compost feedstock comprises of packaging and pruning wastes, butchers' sewage sludge, and organic residuals. Recommendations in a report on environmental issues discussed compost quality, a ban on lighting fire in open areas, and building a database on current studies.
