Power problems persist

Article Abstract:

The Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) expects wholesale rates for electric power in the northwest US to rise by 250% or more by Oct 1, 2001. Steve Wright, acting BPA administrator, said high electricity rates would result in long-term shutdowns of aluminum smelters with operations in the region. Wright has suggested that aluminum smelters stay offline for an extended period so that the BPA would not have to buy power when smelters resume operating in October.
