Recycling agricultural residuals in Israel

Article Abstract:

The Northern Research and Development Center in Magal, Israel has helped to increase the growth of mushroom production through researches since the 1960's. Oyster mushroom cultivation has been found to benefit from the use of dried cotton stalks as substrate. Solid fractions in cattle manure breakdown has been found to be a better replacement for peat in casing soil, resulting in lesser incidence of disease in mushrooms. Mushroom cultivation further benefits from the use of spent mushroom substrate as organic fertilizer, soil, water and air purifier, and soil improver.

Global view: more recycling and biological treatment in the EU

Article Abstract:

One of the most debated topics at the 1998 conference organized by the Institute of Waste Management in the UK tackled the proposed EU requirement on its member states to formulate a scheme for minimizing the amount of organic waste relegated to landfills. Most opponents to the proposal resisted the idea of compulsory organic waste recycling through imposition of landfill limits. Another topic dwelt on the British government's proposed refuse reduction and recycling strategy.
