Taking another look at low-rate composting on poultry farm

Article Abstract:

A litter management system in Ohio uses a cyclical approach for litter management, and the litter has been called 'composted litter' or 'poultry litter'. There is a 19% to 25% range for litter moisture contents, and this low level is able to supply the need for water of the microbial population. There is a disagreement as to whether the product removed from barns should be called compost. The litter has not completed the composting program, so it is more than dehydrated manure, but less than a finished compost.

Innovative in-vessel composting system

Article Abstract:

An innovative in-vessel composting system has been developed by a chicken farmer in Tasmania, Australia. Dead chickens cannot be buried in the region due to high rainfall levels which affect the water table. A concrete mixer has been used to mix chicken mortalities and poultry litter, and chicken litter sawdust has been used to reduce levels of free liquid. Some 1,200 birds can be composted during a cycle lasting 21 days. This method is low-cost, and includes and in-built self-emptying and turning system.
