Trade liberalization, environmental policy, and welfare

Article Abstract:

The effects of trade liberalization on environmental policies in the context of bilateral trade and imperfect competition are analyzed. The issue regarding the effect of a reduction in trade barriers on welfare and the level of environment protection when governments have an incentive to use environmental policy as a substitute for a trade barrier is examined.

Determinig the trade-environment composition effect: the role of capital, labor and environmental regulations

Article Abstract:

The pollution-intensive sectors, that are capital intensive, are subject to opposing forces of comparative advantage yet low environmental regulations are applied to regions with least capital. The origin of compositional changes in pollution from trade liberalization owing to the differences in capital, labor and environmental policies, are analyzed.

'Optimal' pollution abatement- whose benefits matter, and how much?

Article Abstract:

The determinants of environmental regulatory activity and levels of air and water pollution for 409 US pulp and paper mills, using data for 1985-1997, are examined. Spatially lagged instrumental variables are used to control the potential endogeneity of individuals, which choose to locate near the plant.
