Year end review of recycling and composting

Article Abstract:

A review of composting and recycling activity in the different industries in 1997 were presented. Waste management, previously disregarded by large corporations, was turned into a revenue source through the utilization of by-products, as exemplified by Anheuser-Busch Inc. The timber industry was also able to reuse 90% of its wood waste. One industry experiencing problems in the management of waste is agriculture which was subjected to a number of regulations to keep the problem in check. Meanwhile, food residuals composting and green building projects are sectors experiencing growth.

Keeping organics at home

Article Abstract:

A bill prohibiting the inclusion of some yard wastefrom disposal facilities was passed by 21 states in the view of the need to decrease municipal solid waste from the waste stream. This resulted in the development of more centralized yard waste composting programs and spawned the practice of managing disposal of yard waste in backyards. At first, people werenot convinced that home composting is a viable and cost-effective idea. It turned out, however, that strong evidence suggest its viability.

Ten years make a world of difference

Article Abstract:

Solid waste management between 1989 and 1998 was analyzed. In 1989, waste management consisted mainly of landfilling, wherein 80% of waste from 41 states go to landfills. In 1998, refuse disposal has been more efficient. Utilization of recycling has risen to 30%, landfilling decreased to 61% and incineration down to 9%. Curbside recycling and yard trimmings composting programs have also increased, with curbside recycling reaching almost 9,000 in 1997.
