Taking the pulse

Article Abstract:

ISIS was completed in 1984 and is now recognized as the world's most powerful pulsed spallation source which produces intense beams of muons and neutrons for scientific and industrial applications. The neutrons, which are produced by accelerating an intense beam of protons at the speed of 186,000 miles per second, are fired at a heavy metal target at a rate of 50 pulses a second. The operational staff needs to continually maintain the complex and expensive equipment used in the production processes and the balancing of finances, resources and time requires flexible and constant management.
