Painting history: John Trumbull and the Battle of Bunker's Hill

Article Abstract:

Images are not properly used in classrooms, in textbooks and other publications, since they are presented in a manner which does not encourage a complete reading of the images so that they seem to merely dress and not add to the text. To make complete usage of images, it is to be regarded as a source in its own right and this can be achieved by the application of techniques from two disciplines, history and art history that provide a multiple perspective, historical as well as artistic.

The garden in the machine: two American avant-garde films and the nineteenth century visual arts

Article Abstract:

Larry Gottheim's 'Fog Line' and J.J. Murphy's 'Blue Water Light Sign' are two avant-garde movies of the 1970s that reflect the influence of 19th century visual arts. These single shot meditations of nature are like the landscape paintings of the 19th century. The movies, which apparently are about nothing, can be read as interesting commentaries on the intersection of nature and technology.

Making the view from Lookout Mountain: sectionalism and national visual culture

Article Abstract:

An analysis is presented on sectionalism, or regionalism, in 19th-century American painting, particularly landscape painting. The author argues that land represented different social and political ideals to northern and southern Americans and artists; while northerners represented land as public or Manifest Destiny, southerners portrayed land owned by specific families.
