Understanding and evaluating qualitative research

Article Abstract:

Naturalistic qualitative research with families aims to acquire in-depth information about a smaller sample, as opposed to quantitative research which draws from a large, representative sample. Qualitative research focuses on how and why, rather than what, people do or believe. It can also be used for several levels of analysis and seeks to discover new information or ways of thinking, rather than verify existing ones. It also aims to refine the process of theory emergence by producing conceptual images of their settings and mold these continuously according to observations.

Socioeconomic stratification in family research

Article Abstract:

Socioeconomic concepts are increasingly used in family theory and research. However, socioeconomic concepts need to be situated in theoretical concept when used in family theory and research. There is also a need to increase awareness about the powers of socioeconomic measures to explain important family variables and relationships among variables. Family researchers are urged to include measures of several key socioeconomic concepts to be able to compare the explanatory power of the different concepts and combination of concepts.

Marital status and women's health: the effect of economic marital acquisitions

Article Abstract:

A study by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research, Department of Health and Human Services, used data from the Household Component of the 1987 National Medical Expenditure Survey (NMES) to reveal that married women have more financial resources than single women. However, economic factors cannot fully explain the direct relationship between marriage and the good health of both men and women.
