West Africans often sell fake merchandise to tourists in New York, and many are part of the Mouridem and Sufi brotherhood. Mourides and others from West Africa are setting up restaurants and other retail outlets in Harlem and helping to revive the local economy. The Mouride faith has also attracted converts from among US blacks. The Mourides have set up an international trade network which involves transfers of cash from New York to Senegal. Many start-ups nvolve illegal street peddling and the police are getting tougher with the peddlers.
