Cloning Chardonnay: genetic diversity adds to complexity in California wines

Article Abstract:

California Chardonnay is getting better and better, largely because of the effects of cloning. Introducing cuttings from other vineyards will create a more diverse crop of grapes. Paul Masson is said to have brought cuttings to Santa Cruz from Burgundy in 1896.

Yeasts, bacteria and molds can collect in wine corks, and this sometimes results in wine that tastes unpleasant. As long as cork is used as a stopper, there is a risk of corkiness. Wine collectors should buy at least of half-case of their favorite wines.
