European research has shown that people who drink alcohol, and wine in particular, have a lower incidence of cancer, alzheimer's disease, and other health problems. Polyphenols are seen as the major cause of these benefits.

The Greek island of Crete has been the location of many studies on the health aspects of drinking wine and eating olive oil. People on Crete have a very low incidence of heart disease and live longer.

Article Abstract:

Red wine's antioxidant properties are proven healthy by research conducted in Chile. White wine has about 10 times less the polyphenols needed to produce a healthy effect.
