International pasta growth driven by variety

Article Abstract:

Some 63% of dry pasta sold, in the UK, is manufactured as own label products. Barilla sells dried pasta in the UK, France and Germany and retains 41% of the Italian market. Sales of fresh pasta are increasing because it is seen as being more nutritious than dried pasta and it cooks in less time. Fresh pasta sales have increased by 146%, in the UK. The annual per capita consumption of pasta, in the UK, is 2.3 kg in comparison with per capita consumption, in Italy, of 20.8kg. The most popular type of pasta is spaghetti, taking between 76-99% of total pasta sales.

'Pasta war' hots up with claims of unfair aid

Article Abstract:

The EU has been criticsed by Canada and the US for unfairly assisting European pasta manufacturers through raw material price compensation. Canada is now restricting Italian pasta imports, a move which is considered disproportionate by EU Commissioner Sir Leon Brittan and incomprehensible and arbitrary by Luigi Moretti, an Italian MEP. Italian pasta exports to Canada rose 6.1% in 1994 with exports to the US up by 26.4%. US media reports claimed that pasta could cause obesity, although the Italian pasta industry dismissed the claims.
