A summary of the workshop "Alcohol and Calories: A Matter of Balance."

Article Abstract:

A summary of the proceedings of the workshop, 'Alcohol and Calories: A Matter of Balance,' is presented. The Jan 27, 1993 workshop was sponsored by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center, and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. It sought to interpret and evaluate the evidence of alcohol's effects on human metabolism and included sessions on calorimetry and body mass maintenance, alcohol metabolism, and thermoregulation.

Executive summary from the report: analysis of adverse reactions to monosodium glutamate (MSG)

Article Abstract:

An executive summary of the Life Sciences Research Office report on possible adverse reactions to monosodium glutamate (MSG) is presented. The summary contains responses of an ad hoc Expert Panel to 18 questions posed by the FDA on the possible role of MSG in a symptom complex commonly known as the "Chinese Restaurant Syndrome." The questions also focus on severe reactions such as dyspnea, asthma, cardiac arrhythmia, brain lesions and hormonal release from pituitary glands.

Working group session report: setting the basic research agenda

Article Abstract:

Good nutrition is critical to the care and treatment of HIV-infected children. Nutrition intervention strategies should address the effect of nutrients to immune reactions, metabolism and growth. Likewise, the amount of nutrients needed by HIV-infected children relative to those needed by healthy children should also be addressed to create effective nutritional interventions.
