A taste of the trends: what was tops in '98 - and what to buy now

Article Abstract:

A list of 1998's best-tasting wine varieties and individual wines is presented. The year saw such names as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot hitting it big in the market. Some of the general trends in the wine industry in 1998 are also discussed.

Southerners typically take pride in serving old-fashioneds, gin fizzes and Sazeracs as a tradition. Technique, temperature and type of glass are important. Mint julep is the classic southern drink, and must be made so that no part of the mint leaf enters the drink.
