Canadian window stock earns German quality seal

British Columbia window scantling manufacturer Milestone Wood Products Inc has developed a reputation for quality while targeting the demanding German market. Milestone has earned the prestigious German Rosenheim Wood Institute seal of excellence and is negotiating a five-year contract with German window supplier RAAB KARCHER AG. The sawmill offers employees continuous training to maintain its exacting standards.

Small-log peeling methods carve a niche on B.C. coast

Article Abstract:

Don McKay's Coastland Wood Industries Ltd is located in Nanaimo, British Columbia, a coastal town on Vancouver Island. The firm uses advanced Coe peeling technology and inland log-handling techniques to produce green veneer from small-diameter logs. Coastland sells as much veneer as it can produce, and its only recent closure, in Feb 1991, resulted from a temporary inability to obtain logs.

The forest products industry in the US is being compromised by competitive pressures. While US companies focus on environmental concerns and high quality, the international playing field is not level, thereby eroding American competitiveness abroad. Lumber exports declined from $7.3 billion in 1997 to $5.96 billion in 1998, an 18% loss.
