Chip mill enclosures suppress noise output

Article Abstract:

Noise reduction and environmental concerns led to several design changes in Fulghum Fibres Inc.'s new chip mill in Dewy Rose, GA. The Hard Cash mill is almost entirely enclosed, reducing noise 50 ft away by 18 to 25 decibels. To direct noise away from neighbors, The alignment of the drum debarker was changed from the initial design to direct noise away from neighbors. Noise radiates at a right angle to the drum. These innovations are being copied for a Rayonier New Zealand plant in Mataura, New Zealand. A dust-reducing water spray system and a holding pond address environmental concerns.

Alternative raw materials explored at symposium

Article Abstract:

The Apr 1997 International Particleboard/Composite Materials Symposium at Washington State University illustrates the growing industry trend toward the development of medium-density fiberboard and particleboard from cereal straw furnish. Companies are improving their ability to produce industrial grade particleboard from innovative amalgamations of sugar cane bagasse, wheat straw and the residues of hemp, jute, rice, maize, linseed, barley, oats, flax and rapeseed.
