Softwood plywood and veneer-based structural lumber: what does the future hold?

Article Abstract:

Softwood plywood manufacturers are planning to add laminated veneer lumber products (LTV) to their product line to increase their profitability in the highly-competitive wood products market. Transition to a value-added product line, use of advanced manufacturing technologies and low-cost production methods will boost plywood companies' growth chances. Mill modernization and implementation of operating cost-control measures will also help plywood manufacturers become low-cost/high-margin companies.

'Robust design' targets plywood improvements

Article Abstract:

The application of Robust Design principles can reduce plywood manufacturing costs $300,000 annually, according to a study by Boise Cascade Corp. Half of this savings is reduced glue consumption; the other half, blows and delamination reduction. Boise applied Robust Design principles to hot press optimization and research into reducing thickness variations and improving veneer surface condition.
