Tight wood supplies affecting BC companies

Article Abstract:

British Columbia's lumber companies are being affected by the province's efforts to limit wood harvesting to sustainable levels. The limits have caused these companies to import lumber from other regions and to acquire competing companies. The limits have also caused the price of lumber to rise; for example, in Alberta wood prices have risen from C$5/metric ton in 1993 to C$45/ metric ton in 1995. However, the increased demand for Alberta's lumber has caused concern and may result in sales restrictions. As a result, British Columbian lumber companies may need to import wood from the US.
