Insurance commissioner

Article Abstract:

Assemblywoman Diane Martinez, running under the Democratic ticket, will have to contend with the advantages of incumbency and funding of incumbent Chuch Quackenbush of the Republican Party. However, political analysts believe that Martinez's experience in public service, coupled with her abrasive personality, will prove a plus for the insurance industry. Despite Martinez's prospects, the widely held belief that 1998 is a year for the Republicans may just score another victory for Quackenbush.

Reality votes

Article Abstract:

The different ethnic groups in California are increasingly participating in the political arena after years of being silent with regards to government. During the 1996 elections, for instance, the political demographics of the state were noted to be more aligned with the general demographics than in previous years. The upcoming 1998 elections in the state is being seen as a litmus test as to whether the minority groups will sustain their political involvement for the long term.

Over $3 million has been spent in campaign contributions to legislative candidates and over $10 million has been spent on initiatives during the same time period. A total of $5 of the annual dues of each of the 240,000 members goes for political action financing. Over 90% of the political action funds go to Democratic candidates.
