Secretary of State

Article Abstract:

Incumbent Bill Jones may trail Democrat Michela Alioto in their bid for the Secretary of State post, based on recent Field Poll results, but Jones' 50% vote in the primary is still way ahead of Alioto's 39%. Among the concerns that wheelchair-bound Alioto vows to address are the need to improve voter access and increase participation. She has also criticized Jones for his 1996 probe of voter registration fraud, which earned the ire of Latino activists. However, the Spanish newspaper 'La Opinion's' endorsement may help turn Jones' fate around as far as Latino voters are concerned.

An uncertain beginning

Article Abstract:

Proposition 209 by the University of California Board of Regents stated that consideration of race, ethnicity and gender were to be eliminated in the University of California admissions. As a result, a debate on this issue was conducted to identify the necessity of this ruling. However, the proposition was misinterpreted. It actually meant that there would be no special treatment to or discrimination of minority students. Although UCLA has devised an applied academic criteria for the minorities, the opposition argues that educationally sound measures should be applied instead.

Fending off "film flight."

Article Abstract:

California is finding it increasingly difficult to compete with Canada as a location for films and television programmes. Many people associated with the entertainment industry believe that California's elected leaders must now take firm action to address this problem, offering incentives to encourage film and television studios to strengthen their links with California. The film and television industries are extremely important to California's economy, and their demise would significantly boost unemployment levels in the state.
