A sharper edge?

Article Abstract:

San Diego, CA-based regional health system Sharp HealthCare has negotiated a 50/50 joint venture with Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp. Under the venture, a large medical group and four of Sharp's six hospitals will have for-profit status, although the parent entity will remain non-for-profit. Sharp CEO Peter Ellsworth says the alliance will give Sharp a large cash infusion, help with its charitable mission and provide the incentive for physicians to hold down costs. Columbia also has better access to financial markets, which Sharp, as a non-profit, has found problematic in the past. If approved by the California attorney general, the alliance is expected to be finalized by Mar 31, 1996.

A man for the people

Article Abstract:

American Hospital Assn (AHA) chairman-elect Reginald M. Ballantyne III learned early in his career that being a successful hospital administrator involves, in part, responding to the needs and desires of people in the community. Healthcare providers must face the fact, he believes, that they are partly responsible for dealing with problems such as poor nutrition and the need for affordable housing. Ballantyne, also PMH Health Resources Inc CEO, comments on his goals as AHA chair.
