Breaking down assumptions, managing change

Article Abstract:

Health care reform will involve extensive change for health care workers and will require leadership from health care administrators. People have many responses to change, such as the feeling that initial problems in implementing a new plan are proof that the plan is a bad one. To counteract such feelings, managers should stay in close touch with employees and listen to their concerns. They should also provide concrete information about the change rather than leave an information vacuum.

Health care reform

Article Abstract:

Inadequate state-level spending data would make the determination and enforcement of state-level global budgets difficult according to a report by the chairmen of the Prospective Payment Assessment Commission and Physician Payment Review Commission. The American Society of Internal Medicine recommends that consumers should be allowed to see doctors outside of their health plan. Health care reforms that are being considered in the US have already been tried by several other nations.

Making managed care second nature

Article Abstract:

A managed care program has been successfully implemented by the Palo Alto Medical Foundation and the Palo Alto Medical Clinic, in Palo Alto, CA. In 1989, physicians at the clinic were obtaining approximately 35% of their reimbursement via managed care contracts. A decision was made in 1989 to treat all patients on a managed care basis. The successful transition towards a managed care system is attributed to changing doctors' work culture.
