HCFA's new take on physician incentives

Article Abstract:

The Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) has issued a set of rules regarding physician incentive arrangements offered by managed care plans. The rules are in response to concern that several managed care plans are placing patients' care in jeopardy by providing monetary incentives to discharge patients quickly. The HCFA rules apply primarily to Medicare and Medicaid prepaid plans.

Home (care) improvement: Medicare has fueled a boom in home health. But the president's reforms may change all that

Article Abstract:

The burgeoning trend in home healthcare services could be stymied by proposed changes in Medicare. Under Pres Clinton's proposal, the Medicare system would pay a prospective rate for individual incidents of care, beginning in 1999. The cost-cutting reforms could cut down on home visits by registered nurses and substitute phone consultations or limited care-visits by aides.
