Observers see Clinton moving quickly on health care reform

Article Abstract:

President-elect Bill Clinton has promised to put forward a comprehensive health care reform proposal in the first 100 days of his administration. The medical community gave Clinton mixed reviews for his work in Arkansas, claiming he tries to please everyone. However, many experts agree that Clinton has the ability to choose good advisers and that he will listen to them. Health care officials claim that Clinton has a good working knowledge of state health care systems.

Surrogate health care laws help hospitals

Article Abstract:

Surrogate decision-maker laws have been passed in Washington, DC, and 18 states giving family members the right to decide medical treatment for incapacitated patients. The Patient Self Determination Act of 1990, which took effect in Dec 1991, deals with carrying out a patient's advance directive for medical treatment. However, the act does not give enough guidance in cases where the patient is under psychiatric care, not able to communicate or incompetent.

Change is not an option; spurred by health care reform, boards revamp their roles

Article Abstract:

Hospital boards are changing their focus to prepare for an integration of health care services. Integrating services will force hospital boards to change the CEO's job description and performance evaluation and shift the hospital's focus from profitability to the health status of the community. Hospital boards will continue to increase their public accountability for pricing, quality and service issues.
