Strategic planning in rural health care organizations

Article Abstract:

The impact of strategic planning on the performance, organization and strategy of rural hospitals and nursing facilities are analyzed. Rural hospitals achieve higher profits, operating margins and planning effectiveness when a comprehensive strategy is in place. To a lesser degree, strategic planning also leads to lower costs and higher daily revenues per patient. The same results, however, are not found in rural nursing facilities. The implications of these findings are discussed and directions for future research spelled out.

An analysis of physician recruitment strategies in rural hospitals

Article Abstract:

A survey on physician recruitment by the Minnesota Hospital Assn. reveals the strategies employed by 60 short-term general hospitals in Minnnesota to attract physicians. Findings further show that physicians prefer to practice in hospitals with good facilities and services and which provide group practice opportunities. Hospitals should focus less on financial incentive since physicians do not consider it as important as good facilities or group practice opportunities.
