The determinants of hospital profitability

Article Abstract:

A multiple regression analysis was used to attempt to identify hospitals' underlying profitability determinants. The analysis, which measured the effects of 22 variables, found that several patient-mix and managerial variables, including Medicare and Medicaid mix, uncompensated care mix, labor intensity and age of plant, are profitability predictors. Structural factors beyond managerial control do not appear to strongly influence profitability.

Comparing low-severity hospital admissions in IPA HMOs and indemnity-type programs

Article Abstract:

A study compares independent practice association (IPA) health maintenance organizations and indemnity-type insurance programs in terms of low-severity-hospital-patient admissions and length-of-stay. A Logit model controlling for extraneous factors reveals that IPAs do not exhibit decreased low-severity admissions. However, a multiple regression analysis model shows that IPA low-severity patients have shorter length-of-stays.

Hospital survival in a competitive environment: the competitive constituency model

Article Abstract:

Organizational theory can be used to develop a hospital-effectiveness measure. A competitive-constituency model shows how competition can affect a hospital's effectiveness. This model describes power relationships between hospitals, their stakeholders and competing organizations. The effectiveness, in a competitive environment, of Seattle, WA's Veterans Affairs Medical Center is assessed.
