Article Abstract:

The job security of infectious disease specialists is being threatened by hiring and cost restrictions in the managed care setting. Infectious disease specialists, which number 3,500, respond to threats of diseases such as HIV and tuberculosis. Health care experts predict that several of the infectious disease programs in the country's medical schools will be eliminated as a result of costs cutting measures.

Call in for a consult

Article Abstract:

DocTalk, which debuted in Oct 1995, is a telephone information service that connects callers directly to physicians. Calling cards that entitle purchasers to 30 minutes of time on the service sell for $59.95. Founder Brent Blue insists that DocTalk is strictly an information service, but some critics charge that there is only a semantic difference between dispensing information and making diagnoses.

AIDS invades rural Maine

Article Abstract:

AIDS has reached epidemic proportions in rural Maine. There were 651 Maine residents diagnosed with the disease from 1984 to Jun 1995 and there are approximately 2,000 residents with the disease in late 1995. Access to adequate health care and a misdiagnosis by primary care physicians are major problems. Physicians within the state are increasing their expertise.
