Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People?

Article Abstract:

Bad things happen to everyone. It is not so much the event itself but the strategies for responding to it that will determine the long term effect. Strategies for assisting individuals to respond to negative events include listening to the story, avoiding trite reassurance, assisting the individual to care for themselves, identifying areas over which controls are possible, and finding meaning in the event. Realizing there is a choice over how events are regarded can increase personal feelings of power and make it possible to make good come from bad. Key words: coping, self-actualization, self-efficacy, turning good into bad
