A district perspective

Article Abstract:

The role of the district nurse is very complex, dealing with a variety of patients with differing needs in their own environment. An analysis of one area of their work was undertaken in Dundee, Scotland in 1995. Of 273,870 patients seen, 11.1% needed wounds dressing. In carrying out this procedure community nurses had to consider the social, environmental and financial situation of the patient, all which may affect healing and compliance to medical advice. Although the nurse can do little to change patients' social inadequacies, they still have a role in promoting the best possible care.

A screening programme for people over 75

Article Abstract:

Nursing staff at a city health centre developed a screening programme which caters to the needs of patients older than age 75 and which addresses perceived deficiencies in general practitioner care of the elderly. The programme aims to view the elderly person as an individual whilst the screening assessment form focuses on abilities rather than negative aspects. The screening programme is a nurse-led service based on a weekly clinic, with the doctors providing advice and assessment where necessary.

Careless talk: joint winner of the Nursing Narratives Competition Gail Young recalls misjudging her approach to a mother

Article Abstract:

A district nursing sister believes that care should be taken when dealing with parents of sick children, as they are under immense stress. There may be many different reactions to very routine information and the parents's past experiences will help form their attitude towards the child who is now in hospital.
