A cost-effectiveness evaluation of preoperative type-and-screen testing for vaginal hysterectomy

Article Abstract:

Typing and screening blood before vaginal hysterectomy in case transfusion is needed may unnecessarily increase costs. Researchers reviewed records of 1,063 vaginal hysterectomies performed for noncancerous conditions. Twenty-six patients received blood transfusions. Of these, only seven (0.66%) were transfused during surgery. None of these transfusions were emergency transfusions, and all transfused patients would not have been harmed by waiting 20 to 30 minutes for a type-and-screen of their blood immediately before transfusion. By eliminating routine typing and screening, the hospital could have saved $82,914.

Expression of cyclooxygenase-2 in advanced stage ovarian serous carcinoma: Correlation with tumor cell proliferation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, and survival

Article Abstract:

The relationship between cyclo-oxygenase-2 expression and tumor proliferation, apoptosis and angiogenesis is examined in patients with advanced stage high-grade ovarian carcinoma. In high-grade, advanced-stage serous ovarian carcinoma, the expression of cyclo-oxygenase-2 was found to be correlated with tumor proliferation and tumor angiogenesis but was not correlated with apoptotic markers.

Biologic targets for therapeutic intervention in endometrioid endometrial adenocarcinoma and malignant mixed mullerian tumors

Article Abstract:

The AKT signaling cascade in endometrial cancers is investigated and its therapeutic potential is assessed. It is concluded that apoptosis and growth arrest that results from AKT inhibition expose opportunities for therapeutic intervention.
