A protective gene for graft-versus-host disease

Article Abstract:

A gene variation that produces high amounts of interleukin-10 may protect some stem cell transplant recipients from developing a serious complication of transplantation called graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). Interleukin-10 suppresses the immune response and helps the immune system tolerate the transplant. A 2003 study confirmed this effect in patients who received an HLA-identical transplant from a relative. Further research is needed to determine if it can occur between unrelated donors and recipients.

Sick chaperones, cellular stress, and disease

Article Abstract:

Systems of proteins known as molecular chaperones help to preserve a total set of functionally efficient proteins in cells during injury or anxiety. A study describes the contribution of defective chaperones to aging and many other diseases.
