A selective Sema3A inhibitor enhances regenerative responses and functional recovery of the injured spinal cord

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine whether neutralizing Sema3A by administering SM-216289 to the injured spinal cord could create a more permissive environment for axonal regeneration in vivo. Sema3A is essential for the inhibition of axonal regeneration and other regenerative responses after spinal cord injury (SCI) and Sema3A inhibitors could be used in the treatment of human SCI patients.

Cell-based tests tackle predicting safety of antibody drugs

Article Abstract:

The European Center for the Validation of Alternative Methods (EVCAM) in March 2006 approved six new toxicology screens based on cultures of human cells that would help predict the safety of antibody drugs. The new techniques improve on two expensive present methods, namely the Limulus assay and testing on rabbits, and might eventually replace the existing technology.

Electrical impulses recharge spinal cord injury research

Article Abstract:

A study conducted at the Baltimore-based Kennedy Krieger Institute revealed that exercise could improve sensory and motor function long after the initial injury. The study concluded that of the restorative group, 40% regained some motor function such as the ability to walk without a walker or better bladder control as compared with only 4% in the stretching group.
