Case 35-2004: A 68-year-old man with end-stage renal disease and thickening of the skin

Article Abstract:

An insight of a case of a 68-year-old man suffering from progressive thickening of the skin of the arms and legs is presented. The patient's skin on the fourth hospital day was examined and found to be waxy, taut, hardened plaques with brown pigmentation extending from both upper thighs to the most distal point on the toes. The way diagnostic procedure is performed is revealed.

Salt wasting and deafness resulting from mutations in two chloride channels

Article Abstract:

A new type of kidney disorder that causes salt wasting and sensorineural deafness is identified, which is called the Bartter's syndrome. It was found that the combined mutation of the two chloride channels CLC-Ka and CLC-Kb results in the above disease and it badly disturbs the cell functions dependent on them.

Chronic kidney disease in the developing world

Article Abstract:

Chronic kidney disease and the prevalence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in developing countries are discussed. The International Society of Nephrology has developed few guidelines, which are adapted by the developing countries, to detect and treat kidney disease at the earliest possible stage.
