Anti-DNA meets NMDA in neuropsychiatric lupus

Article Abstract:

Research presented concerns the physiological aspects of systemic lupus erythematosus, focusing on how the autoantibodies of lupus relate to neuronal degeneration and brain injury. Research suggests that this injury in lupus patients is caused by the cross-reaction of autoantibodies to double-stranded DNA and the N-methyle-D-aspartate glutamate receptor.

Autoimmune disease affect susceptibility to autoimmunity at three levels: the overall reactivity of the immune system, the specific antigen and its presentation, and the target issue. Autoimmune disease is controlled by genetic and environmental factors.
