A trial of three regimens for primary amyloidosis: colchicine alone, melphalan and prednisone, and melphalan, prednisone, and colchicine

Article Abstract:

A combination of melphalan, colchicine and prednisolone appear to be more effective in treating amyloidosis than colchicine alone. Amyloidosis is characterized by an abnormal deposition of proteins in various organs. Researchers randomly assigned 220 patients with amyloidosis to take either colchicine alone, melphalan and prednisone or all three drugs. The two drug combinations more than doubled the average survival rate compared to colchicine alone. Those who experienced a drop in blood levels of the protein had longer survival rates.
