A trouble shared

Article Abstract:

A nurse who is diabetic describes his work as a specialist diabetes nurse. Having the same condition as the patients can occasionally cause personal upset, particularly when dealing with a patient with complications, and it can cause him to expect too much from his patients concerning the control of the diabetes. However, he feels that having the same condition and the same struggles as the patients helps him to empathize, and allows the patients to drop their defences.

Edna's war

Article Abstract:

The experiences of a volunteer British Red Cross nurse during the Second World War are presented. Her lack of preparation for the tasks she was required to undertake is discussed, and the need to carry out a wide range of domestic work, along with nursing duties, is detailed. The challenges of dealing with patients' mental and emotional problems are recalled and the positive aspects of taking responsibility for critically ill patients are considered.
