Bloodlines

Article Abstract:

The growth of blood vessels around tumour tissue is studied. It is observed that cells nearest to areas of low oxygen (hypoxia) in a tumour are in most need of blood vessels, have the highest expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and hypoxia could directly induce expression of VEGF in cells, thus proving the validation of the hypothesis that targeting the tumour vasculature is viable strategy to treat cancer.

Ion implicated in blood pact

Article Abstract:

The implications of nitrite serving as a backup source of nitric oxide to buffer tissue against severe hypoxia are presented. The function of nitrite in vasodilation in response to oxygen levels and oxidative stress in the tissue environment is analyzed.

Learning to take a deep breath-with BDNF

Article Abstract:

BDNF and serotonin may become important therapeutic targets.Short bursts of hypoxia induce a form of learning in the neuronal network that controls breathing. This process now is shown to share mechanism with synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus.
