Bone mass, bone loss, and osteoporosis prophylaxis

Article Abstract:

The drug alendronate may be effective in preventing osteoporosis but there are concerns about using it in all healthy postmenopausal women. A 1998 study found that the drug prevented bone loss at low dosages and even increased bone mass at higher dosages. However, the drug must be taken continuously to maintain this effect. The drug has been used safely for patients with Paget's disease of the bone for many years. However, many postmenopausal women might get as much benefit from estrogen replacement therapy, vitamin D and calcium supplements and physical exercise.

Health professionals and the sex education of adolescents

Article Abstract:

Developing a cohesive sex education strategy in schools requires the implementation of small, single sex groups preferably being taught by a medical professional of the same sex. Researchers found educating adolescents about sex was often difficult when dealing with a large group of mixed-sex children. Boys tended to be more negative towards any discussions taking place, resulting in a lower understanding of the issues involved. Children tended to respond better to sex education if they felt they were being talked to rather than talked at.
