Can clinical research thrive (or survive)?

Article Abstract:

The future of clinical research may be in jeopardy due to limited funding. Cost-cutting measures by managed care groups and the use of community hospitals over academic health centers have contributed to the tenuous state of clinical research efforts. However, several managed care groups are supporting clinical research through research networks. Research investments by drug companies and private clinical research organizations are expected to supplement clinical research funding.

Article Abstract:

Delegates at the Medical Society of the District of Columbia's annual policy-setting meeting voted to endorse, with qualifications, a single payer health care system, becoming the first state-level medical association to do so. Physicians frustrated by managed care limitations are apparently reconsidering the single-payer concept for financing health services. Pros and cons of a single-payer system are discussed.
