Cash control

Article Abstract:

A UK hospital ward sister moved to a hospital where she was able to become a budget-holding ward manager. She describes the role of a ward manager and the benefits of introducing this position. Ward managers are able to monitor and take control of the spending on their ward. They can use the budget creatively to solve problems and ultimately provide a better standard of patient care. However, ward managers need to take time to learn the necessary skills and to perform management tasks. They should have time away from routine ward work and opportunities to learn from colleagues.
