Mycobacterium tuberculosis isocitrate lyases 1 and 2 are jointly required for in vivo growth and virulence

Article Abstract:

A brief description on the prokaryotic- and eukaryotic-like isoforms of the glyoxylate cycle enzyme isocitrate lyase (ICL) that are jointly required for fatty acid catabolism and virulence in Mycobacterium tuberculosis is presented. The absence of ICL orthologs in mammals should facilitate the development of glyoxylate cycle inhibitors as new drugs for the treatment of tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis, a neglected opportunity?

Article Abstract:

Tuberculosis (TB) is considered to be one of the most neglected diseases in which pharmaceutical companies have been reluctant to invest due to a perception of low commercial potential. Since TB remains a major public health issue, availability of effective new agents will be critical to controlling TB.
