Clarithromycin and omeprazole for Helicobacter pylori

Article Abstract:

The new FDA-approved combination therapy of clarithromycin (Biaxin) and omeprazole (Prilosec) may offer no superiority over other established antimicrobial drugs for the treatment of duodenal ulcer associated with bacterial infections. Helicobacter pylori infection of the stomach lining is the cause of most duodenal ulcers. Compared to standard multiple drug regimens at half the cost, clarithromycin plus omeprazole is similarly effective. Clarithromycin causes less stomach irritation but can cause unpleasant taste sensations. No adverse effects are typically associated with omeprazole. In terms of compliance, patients may find it easier to take two drugs instead of three or four different pills.

Diagnosis and treatment guidelines for Helicobacter pylori

Article Abstract:

Patients with both documented Helicobacter (H.) pylori infections and stomach ulcers appear to be appropriate candidates for antibiotic treatment. Patients positive for H. pylori but who do not have stomach ulcers may not benefit from treatment. Most indigestion is not caused by stomach ulcers. Blood tests and tissue sampling tests can accurately determine the presence of H. pylori infections and stomach ulcers. Breath screening tests may soon be available.
