Cost-effectiveness of cotrimoxazole prophylaxis among persons with HIV in Uganda

Article Abstract:

A cost-effectiveness analysis of providing cotrimoxazole prophylaxis to all HIV-infected persons in the context of home-based provision of basic preventive care in rural Uganda was conducted to examine the impact on cost and cost-effectiveness of different screening regimens. Daily cotrimoxazole prophylaxis for HIV-infected individuals is highly cost-effective in rural Uganda and the use of screening algorithms to identify individuals with advanced HIV disease might result in higher program costs and less favorable cost-effectiveness.

Unfinished business - Expanding HIV testing in developing countries

Article Abstract:

The group of eight major industrial countries (France, the US, Britain, Germany, Japan, Italy, Canada and Russia) made a commitment on July 2005 to work towards universal access to the prevention and treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and AIDS. The move brought to light an HIV testing emergency, that knowledge of serologic status is required for the appropriate targeting of services and interventions.

HIV prevention for a threatened continent: Implementing positive prevention in Africa
