Dilemmas in caries diagnosis

Article Abstract:

Diagnostic techniques for dental caries should be re-evaluated because dental caries are occur less frequently and progress more slowly as dental hygiene practices improve. Using a sharp tool known as an explorer may no longer be appropriate since slower disease progression means that an explorer may cause additional damage to tooth enamel that otherwise might have healed itself. False-negative diagnoses may be more common since the slower nature of the disease changes traditional visual and tactile indicators. The development of more accurate diagnostic techniques based on digital radiography, electrical resistance measurement and fiber-optic transillumination may aid dental clinicians in identifying the more subtle changes found in carious lesions.

A systematic review of the performance of a laser fluorescence device for detecting caries

Article Abstract:

A systematic review is conducted to assess the diagnostic performance of the DIAGNOdent (DD), a device for detecting caries using laser fluorescence. It is found that the DD is more sensitive than traditional diagnostic methods, however, its usefulness as a principal diagnostic tool is limited by the increased likelihood of false-positive diagnosis compared with that with visual methods.

How do I document all the benefits of dental care?

Article Abstract:

Dental care has biological, psychosocial, and economic outcomes in addition to clinical outcomes. Further research on these outcomes may show that dental treatment has greater benefits than the prevention of tooth disease.
