Due south

Article Abstract:

A freelance mental health practitioner describes his move to the Falkland Islands to set up a community mental health service. The population of the Falkland Islands is 2,081, comprising 26 nationalities. There is a lack of contact with the outside world and the VHF telephone communication system is prone to atmospheric interference. The islanders were drawn into the 20th century and its associated knowledge and problems, after the war. There were difficulties in being accepted and the initial lack of budget was an obstacle. There is currently a functioning primary health care team, comprising over 20 members and good working links were forged with military psychiatric nurses. Some of the people now accept the need for mental health care, but others remain opposed to the concept.
