Psychiatric Diagnoses in Adolescents Seropositive for the Human Immunodeficiency Virus

Article Abstract:

Teenagers with a mental disorder may engage in behaviors that put them at risk of HIV infection. In a survey of 34 HIV-positive teenagers, 85% tested positive for some kind of mental disorder on the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders-Patient Edition (SCID-P). About half had a history of a mental disorder before they became HIV-infected and 82% had a history of substance abuse.

Serotonin syndrome after sertraline overdose in a 5-year-old girl

Article Abstract:

A discussion of serotonin syndrome is presented. A 5-year-old girl ingested some sertraline antidepressant tablets and was brought to the hospital with elevated heart rate, muscle twitching, fever, and sweating. After discharge, she continued to be irritable, agitated, combative and impulsive for approximately one month. Serotonin syndrome is caused by an excess of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Sertraline increases serotonin in nerve synapses. Symptoms can persist for several weeks after the drug is withdrawn.

Effect of HIV counseling and testing on sexually transmitted diseases and condom use in an urban adolescent population

Article Abstract:

Neither counseling nor HIV testing seems to affect adolescent use of condoms or high risk sexual behavior. In a study of 149 adolescent patients were given HIV behavior questionnaires which were followed by counseling and testing for the presence of HIV infection. They were divided into three groups -- F, for frequent/always use of condoms; S, for sometimes use; and R, for rarely or never use. After the test, only some of the F group maintained their frequent use, but most of the patients fell to the R group. This result is similar to that found when adults are tested.
