Effect of reducing interns' work hours on serious medical errors in intensive care units

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted that compares the rates of serious medical errors made by interns while they are reading electrocardiograms after an extended work shift than after a night of sleep. It is concluded that eliminating extended work shifts and reducing the number of hours interns works per week can reduce serious medical errors in the intensive care unit.

Effect of reducing intern's weekly work hours on sleep and attentional failures

Article Abstract:

A study is made to quantify work hours and sleep in interns during a traditional schedule and to measure the effect of an intervention designed to eliminate work. It is concluded that eliminating interns' extended work shifts in an intensive care unit significantly increased sleep and decreased attentional failures during night work hours.
